The Produce Marketing Association has responded to the devastation along the US Gulf Coast. A statement said:

"With the overwhelming scope of damage and loss of life along the Gulf Coast, the thoughts and prayers of PMA and its leaders continue to go out to the hundreds of thousands of people affected by Hurricane Katrina.

"Already there has been a phenomenal humanitarian response from individuals and organisations from all over the world. When investigating such disasters in the past, PMA has been advised that the best and most meaningful way to provide support is to focus assistance through established relief agencies. With that in mind, PMA has made a donation to the American Red Cross. In addition, it is PMA's tradition to attempt to contact any members affected by such a disaster to offer our support.

"Obviously, this effort will take place over an extended period of time. PMA members wishing to contribute produce to the cause are encouraged to contact America's Second Harvest which has the infrastructure in place to deal with food donations."
