Plant species under threat

Some of the UK’s most valued plant species could come under threat as a result of climate change, a major new report has revealed.

The Monarch report - the result of a seven year research programme led by Natural England - was unveiled this week by Defra biodiversity minister Barry Gardiner.

“Climate change is the most serious threat to biodiversity in the 21st century. It is already happening and its impacts will continue for decades to come. We need to take action now to ensure that our plants and wildlife are able to adapt,” said Gardiner, who added that the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions is key to combating climate change.

Twinflower and oblong woodsia were two plant species singled out as being particularly under threat, though a number of others would probably have to move further north if they are to survive.
