Former leader of Wandsworth Council Sir Edward Lister has been appointed to the board of the Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA).
Lister has been involved with the market’s redevelopment since its launch, both through the council and more recently as deputy mayor of planning and policy at the Greater London Authority (GLA).
He starts his four-year term at CGMA today (1 July).
“Sir Edward has an unrivalled and diverse experience of the London government and international business worlds,” said CGMA chair, Pam Alexander. 'I am delighted to welcome Sir Edward to the Board at this important time for New Covent Garden Market. Work has started on the £130 million redevelopment, which will provide modern facilities for our 200 tenants and a new Food Quarter for London. Sir Edward's skills and experience will be invaluable in this transformation.'
Lister has recently been appointed chairman of the homes and communities agency and a governor of the Museum of London, adding to his role as senior advisor to UK Trade and Industry's Regeneration Investment Organisation.
In making the appointment for Defra, Lord Gardiner of Kimble said: 'I am delighted that Sir Edward is to join the CGMA Board. His vast experience across London as well as his long standing local connections will be invaluable during this important and exciting time for the Market.'
Lister said: 'New Covent Garden Market is one of the three icons at Nine Elms on the South Bank and its retention at the heart of the new quarter provides over 2,500 jobs as well as drawing people into a new Food Quarter. I am excited now to play a direct role in supporting its redevelopment.'
The reappointment has been made in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments
