The organisation is calling on the authorities to consider studies carried out by an independent research centre since 1987, and look into supporting and promoting pistachio cultivation as a viable alternative for almond growers.

It takes five to nine years for pistachio plantations to enter into full commercial production, and Ucaman would like to see conversion as soon as possible to guarantee the livelihoods of several thousand families dependent on the almond crop which is decreasing in viability.
