Estimates released by the California Agricultural Statistics Service (Cass) indicate volumes of 127,008tonnes of the best quality many growers say they have ever seen at this stage of the harvest.

The marketing outlook is also bright, according to Cass as global demand is high for California's record volumes thanks to a lack of carryover into 2002 and possibly even into 2003, and the high quality of the crop.

In 2001, the horticultural and tropical products division of the US foreign agriculture service reports, the US exported 33,211tonnes of pistachios in 2001 worth some $109 million. China, Belgium and Germany were the top three export destinations – accounting for half of all sendings – although much of the volume destined for the two European countries was re-exported around the continent. European, Chinese, Japanese and Canadian markets continue to show expansion for US pistachios.
