Pink onions in at Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's has boosted its onion lines with the addition of Rosé de Roscoff - the original ingredient in French onion soup.

Available under the Taste The Difference brand, The Rosé de Roscoff onion is only grown by farmer Prince de Bretagne in the Roscoff region of Brittany, France and therefore has protected status.

Natasha Hookham, Sainsbury's product technologist said:" These onions really are the Champagne of the onion world, as they can only be grown in the regional Roscoff area of Brittany. Now our customers no longer have to take a trip across the channel as they can enjoy this special onion in their own home."

The sweet pink onion is prized in France and natives hold an annual fete in August to celebrate its rich history and flavour, using it in soups, tarts and bread.

Hookham said the Rosé de Roscoff onions are hand strung for freshness and with their distinctive sweet and fruity flavour, they are mild enough to be used raw in salads or sandwiches.
