The Pink Lady apple brand is sponsoring a new international photography award - the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2012.

The award has nine categories and is open to professional and amateur photographers, giving them an opportunity to show their work and the chance to win the £5,000 top prize.

One of the categories is An Apple A Day, which hopes to identify the most creative apple images. Each entry will earn a £2 donation to Great Ormond Street Hospital children’s charity.

Coregeo is the master licensor of Pink Lady in the UK. MD Andy Macdonald said: “When you open a magazine, there is always food photography and it is very important because of the coverage it gets. It is an art form and this is a great opportunity.”

Within 24 hours of announcing the award this week, the competition website already had over 500 visits and interest in coverage from magazines around the world. A panel of 20 food journalists, photographers, retail giants and chefs including musician-cheesemaker Alex James and Michelin-starred Tom Aikens will judge the entries.

Macdonald also reported that Pink Lady sales for the first six months of 2011 are 20 per cent up year on year, and that the fruit is just 0.2 per cent behind third-ranked Granny Smith in the UK apple value charts with Gala and Braeburn which head the table now firmly in its sights. The 2011 European apple crop is forecast to be some five to seven per cent up on last year.
