Picota to finish early

Martín: early finish

Martín: early finish

This season’s Picota cherry campaign is progressing reasonably well, with the shorter volumes reported last month on freshinfo still holding true.

Jesús Martín, managing director of the Regulatory Council for cherries from the Valley del Jerte in south-west Spain, which controls the production regimes and quality of all cherries including Picota from 4,300 local growers, predicted lower volumes, but “fantastic” quality, when the Journal visited the Valle del Jerte in June. Certified production, he said, might only reach 3,000 tonnes, well down on the five year average.

“There is nothing new to report on that front,” he told freshinfo this morning. “However, it is looking now that the season will have practically finished by the end of next week and unfortunately we will not make it through to the end of July with Picotas. The weather has brought the crop on maturity-wise and with strong demand in the marketplace, there will be an early finish.”
