A new preparation-free parsnip that is big on taste has been launched onto the UK market just in time for Christmas.

Piccolo parsnip is produced by Freshgrowers Ltd and is intended to give buyers a convenient and full-flavoured option in the parsnip market.

The new root crop has been on the commercial market for two weeks and has been picked up by Sainsbury’s. Piccolo is also being targeted at chefs, foodservice, caterers and pub chains.

The new parsnip is under production in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire until February 2009, although the season is likely to be extended.

Alan Hunt, commercial manager for Freshgrowers, said: “We are focusing on taste with this parsnip - it is not brilliantly white, but more golden.

“It needs no preparation - you can put it straight into the oven, so it is very convenient. It has been grown as something truly different.”

The Piccolo parsnip is included in the Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference range under the name Heritage.

Freshgrowers was previously responsible for reintroducing the Chantenay carrot, which is now grown year round, to the UK market.
