Peviani moves into seedless watermelons

Seedless watermelons are the latest venture for one of Italy's largest producers, Peviani Group.

According to company director, Gino Peviani, pictured, while volumes are still low, Peviani is planning to send trial shipments to four countries across Europe this year.

Other new activities include trialling new varieties of seedless grapes, as well as a new top-quality trade mark for vegetables, due to be unveiled in November, said Peviani.

Peviani Group is a private company, based outside of Milan, with packing houses linked to production sites in Veneto, Puglia and Sicily as well.

The company grows a variety of products, of which brassicas, salads and fennel provide a strong focus.

One of its divisions, Peviani Frutta, also provides carrots, potatoes and cherry tomatoes for export.

While Peviani focuses on the domestic market, the company is always investigating possible alternatives, said its director.

He added: “Expansion is unavoidable. The European market is overcrowded because of growing supplies, which makes the market heavy, while consumption is at a standstill. Looking for new partners out of Europe is one of Peviani's top priorities.”
