The vast majority of Peruvian citrus exports are destined for EU markets, according to the Peruvian branch of Procitrus.

A total of 85 per cent of the $18 million exports are destined for the old continent. Exports amounted to close on $9m in the first six months of 2006.

Exports to Europe are stimulated by free import conditions, according to Procitrus president Antonio Gainsa.

Andrew Sharp, business development director at Mack Multiples, said: “The increase in Peruvian exports will have a positive effect in Europe and in the UK, as competition makes for the availability of a better quality product and better value for the consumer.

“Peru has a unique climate with good growing conditions, and Peruvian exports are becoming increasingly important in the changeover season for citrus.”
