Persimmon is expected to prove popular with UK consumers this season as sales of unusual fresh fruits have soared, according to Foods from Spain.
UK shoppers have been buying an increasing amount of fruit that they consider exotic - and sales of this category have grown up by nine per cent in the last 12 months, according to TNS Worldpanel data.
The Spanish persimmon, which is derived from the Kaki persimmon, is available in the UK from mid-October to mid-December.
The yellowy orange fruit can be eaten fresh like an apple, as an ingredient in deserts or salads, or as an accompaniment to poultry, lamb or pork, according to Foods from Spain. And the high-fibre fruit, which is rich in vitamins A and C, has been found to reduce cholesterol, lower blood pressure and protect against heart disease.
María José Sevilla, director of Foods from Spain, said: “We already know that UK shoppers are making healthier choices, and fresh produce is the fastest growing grocery category as a result. However, during this last season they have also become more adventurous and have begun to seek out a much wider variety in the fruit and vegetables they buy.”
The acceleration in sales has been helped by more consumers understanding how to cook and eat exotic fruit, according to Sevilla. “Accordingly, sales of persimmon have grown as people have discovered the variety of simple ways to eat it,” she added.
Foods from Spain is running a national persimmon promotion in which UK shoppers can win one of 1,000 prizes.
