The Perpignan combined road-rail transport terminal, which recently underwent a €40 million extension, is set to develop new routes carrying perishable freight.

Plans are well underway to launch swapbody services transporting fresh produce originating from North and West Africa, Spain and southern France, to destinations in northern France and beyond.

A spokesman for the project said discussions between all potentially interested parties - including fruit and vegetable importers and wholesalers, swapbody operators, the national railfreight operator, Fret SNCF and France’s rail network manager, the RFF - have been held on a regular basis since January this year. Traffic will transit through Port Vendrès, around 20km from Perpignan. The port operates a 17,000 sq metre warehouse dedicated to fruit shipments, of which 16,000 sq metres are cold store facilities.
