The research - a £1.5 million partnership between the John Innes Centre (JIC) and the Food and Environment Research Agency - is a LINK project funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and DEFRA with Birds Eye, Premier Foods and The Co-operative among those involved.

The project is looking at when best to harvest the peas in terms of maturity, project leader Claire Domoney explained. It is hoped the information can then be passed on to seed breeders to put quality alongside yield, with disease resistance also a priority.
