Pepper prices soar as production falls

Yellow peppers from the Netherlands have shot up in price by almost 50 per cent in a week on some UK wholesale markets, from 700p a 5kg carton to 1000p.

A spokesman for Dutch supply group The Greenery told freshinfo that in general at this point in the season, the production of ripe varieties is decreasing.

He said: “The supply of red product at this point is still quite good as we have witnessed an expansion of acreage in the last year.

“This expansion was at the cost of yellow and orange peppers, so the drop in production takes place in all colours but is felt more in orange and yellow. Green production has stayed level.”

The Netherlands will continue to be the main source of supply for the UK until Spanish product comes on stream in seven to eight weeks’ time at the end of October.

The spokesman added: “Every year, wholesale prices increase around this time of the season because of the increased demand for this product.”
