Horticulture Research International's best-practice guide aims to help UK growers improve their competitiveness and profitability by achieving best practice at each key stage in production.

Information was collected from the UK and around the world and tailored to the UK industry. An illustrated printed version presented in a clear and easy-to-read format has been produced for distribution to growers to provide quick and convenient access to information and help shape decision making. HRI has also produced a CD-Rom for those seeking more background detail and access to an extensive list of references.

The following key issues are covered: scion varieties, rootstocks, propagation, irrigation, nutrition, flowering, fruit set, pruning, control of tree growth and cropping; integrated pest and disease management; harvesting, storage, packaging and marketing.

All pear growers registered with the Apple & Pear Research Council during the year to March 31, 2003 will receive the printed guide free of charge. Selected industry advisors seeking a more in-depth study of each section will receive the full CD-Rom.

Commenting on the guide, Clive Baxter, pear grower and chairman of HDC's Tree Fruit Panel said :Following the well received release of the Apple Best Practice Guide, I'm sure growers will welcome this one for pears. The chances of being a profitable pear grower are enhanced by doing the best possible in every aspect of growing. All UK growers now have the opportunity to excel by referring to this comprehensive manual.' The guide was developed by agronomists at HRI East Malling, in association with Adas Horticulture, the Farm Advisory Services Team, Worldwide Fruit Qualytech and Tony Webster, formerly of HRI and now an independent consultant. Funding was provided by Defra.
