Samples of imported ears supplied by Dutch importer-exporter Fruitmasters and tested by the Dutch authorities were reported to exceed maximum residue limits (MRL) of chlormequat. The pears were reported to be imported into the Netherlands from two growers: AZ AGR La Pergola and Agricola Bonechi. The residue was 1mg/kg.

The Fresh Produce Consortium has issued a statement. 'Importers should check carefully with their suppliers to ensure chlormequat is being used in accordance with manufacturers' recommendation,' the statement read. 'Importers should note that product found exceeding the European Commission's MRL should not go on sale in the UK. The recommended level, if any, of chlormequat should not exceed 0.5mg/kg.'
