Parents face 5 A DAY confusion

Parents are claiming that rising food prices have put their recommended 5 A DAY out of reach, a new government study has found.

The survey of 1,000 parents by the Department of Health revealed that one in three say their children know more about healthy eating campaigns than they do.

Three quarters were unaware that frozen and canned produce counted towards the 5 A DAY target. Half had no idea that cooked vegetables counted, while others mistakenly assumed potatoes could be included.

Research shows that just over half of the UK population eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

Health minister Dawn Primarolo said: “We welcome the fact that children are absorbing our 5 A DAY messages and can teach their parents and peers to eat more healthily too.
