PAI Pyramids has set its stall out for a promising citrus season by developing a new packing line to deal with increased capacity.

The company, part of the Misr Pyramids Group, began harvesting fruit last week and will wait until January for its first shipments to the UK as it looks to achieve the perfect sizes and fruit quality.

Last season’s citrus crop proved difficult, with export volumes down 25 per cent due largely to the economic crisis.

Export specialist Hoda Ismail said the company was confident it could battle through adversity. She told FPJ: “Although we faced these problems, we have tried to create an infrastructure to grow more and more. We have established a new packing line capable of packing around 35,000 tonnes of citrus a year.’’

On the show, she said: “We have been very impressed with Freshgate 2009 - although it’s the first one, there have been a lot of serious clients.”
