Israeli sweet potato specialist David’s Fruit has announced the opening of a specially designed packhouse for the product, which will boost packing capacity by 400 per cent.

Custom-designed and installed by international packhouse technology producers Eshet Eilon, from Kibutz Eilon in the north of Israel, the new machinery incorporates a stainless steel line with high-performance electronic and software devices.

Managing director Itai David said: “The tailor-designed packing line was developed to accommodate the increasing demands of our customers. We are constantly required to improve our packing procedure and demonstrate high quality, accurately sized produce. Therefore, special state-of-the-art vision systems were developed, enabling grading of the sweet potatoes, in addition to the weight requirements, also by diameter, length, shape and even colour.”

David’s Fruit will market 4,000 tonnes of sweet potatoes this season, all grown in Israel, with plans to boost production in 2007.
