Conservative leader Michael Howard, minister for food, farming, and sustainable energy Lord Whitty, and Canadian deputy minister of agriculture Leonard Edwards are among the politicians to head the 59th Oxford Farming Conference early in January.

The conference is themed “Seizing the initiative in a new world for farming.” It will also include entrepreneurs that have succeeded in farming and land-based enterprises. Ventures to be discussed include the production of premium potato crisps, “well hung and tender” beef, biofuels and added-value meals, according to the conference chairwoman Caroline Drummond.

“The Oxford Farming Conference is unique,” said Drummond. “It is a time for like-minded individuals to come together to hear leading speakers, meet new people, share ideas, and address the future of our industry.

“The conference takes place at a time of unprecedented change for our industry. Two days invested at Oxford at the start of the New Year will be well spent looking at what this change means, where the initiatives lie and how to seize those initiatives.”

The programme also features a debate in the Oxford Farming Union where Lord Carter and MP Jim Paice will propose: “This house believes that British Farming is good for the environment.”

The conference will take place in Oxford’s Examination Schools on January 4-5.
