Alan Owens, executive chairman of Greenvale AP, has received the 2006 British Potato Industry Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the sector.

The award was presented at the British Potato Council’s Seed Industry Event in Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland, on November 2.

Owens has worked within the potato industry for 33 years.

BPC chairman David Walker said: “Mr Owens’ career history speaks for itself.

“He has worked hard to innovate, restructure and re-organise businesses to meet the demands of this diverse industry, and I am delighted his work is being formally recognised.

“Starting his career as a fieldsman, he worked his way through the ranks to become the highly-respected executive chairman of Greenvale AP.

“From being instrumental in the first-ever development of a fleet of potato bulkers, to leading a successful management buyout, his leadership kills are second to none.”

The Potato Industry Awards started in 1997. Nominations for the 2007 award are due open in May.
