A new guide aimed at reducing the amount of organic waste businesses produce has been released by sustainable business expert Envirowise.

With 15-18 million tonnes of food waste produced in the UK each year, it is a growing problem for the sector as disposal costs rise and industry pressure to reduce waste by 15-20 per cent increases.

Tim Lineham, Envirowise programme manager for Wales, said: “Our Organic Food Waste Guide is aimed at businesses of all sizes and gives advice on dealing with a range of different waste streams.

“With increasing commodity prices and the landfill tax currently at £32 per tonne, reducing waste is an area where significant amounts of money can be saved.”

The Organic Food Waste Guide suggests companies adopt a systematic approach to waste minimisation and encourages businesses to consider methods that prevent producing waste.

After assessing all possible options for reducing and reusing waste, the guide advises on recycling options such as composting, which can help businesses reduce their landfill costs.

Envirowise offers a free tailored advice service to Welsh businesses working on resource efficiency and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill with specialist advice from our network of regional managers.

Envirowise are also hosting a series of free Landfill Diversion Masterclasses in late March, at different locations across Wales. These masterclasses will suggest methods of diverting waste and saving money to businesses.
