OFF limits: developments will look at packaging for organic and conventional products

Organic Farm Foods (OFF) has transformed its Packaging Development Unit into a stand-alone business, moving it to new premises at its Leominster site.

Branded COMPAK (Packaging) Ltd, the new operation will be headed up by Dave Holbourn, who has been developing ranges of bio-packaging - trays, wraps, nets and punnets, for the last four years, and now has the opportunity to push on with his efforts.

Holbourn said: "The aim of this company is to specialise in biodegradable and compostable packaging, not only for organic produce, but in time for conventional lines as well, as European waste regulations begin to bite right across our sector, and retailers and their customers become increasingly disenchanted with plastic containers that have a five-day useful life then take 500 years to degrade."

OFF managing director Peter Segger added: "There are already a handful of companies dealing with biodegradable and compostable packaging in Europe, but very few with this level of specialist development knowledge, and none ensuring that the packaging dealt with conforms to the very stringent rules laid down by the EU - EN13432/2000.
