Sales of organic food in the UK topped £1 billion in the past year, according to analysts TNS Worldpanel.

The amount spent on organic certified goods in shops rose by 9.3 per cent in the year to March 2007.

Fresh produce was one of the categories spearheading growth, along with dairy goods. Milk made up 19 per cent of organic growth, while sales of organic meat, fish and poultry increased by 11.5 per cent.

Over the past 12 months, more than 20 million British households bought organic products, with 1.6m first-time purchasers.

But the sales growth rate slowed to nearly half that of the previous year.
