Twenty-one years of study have found organic farming produces a 20 per cent smaller crop than conventional farming.

The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture, which is based in Switzerland, carried out the comparison between organic and conventional agriculture.

They say that organic farming may be more beneficial to the soil and biodiversity, but organic farming methods are not likely to feed a world population of 10 billion – the population prediction for 50 years time.

However, organic food production could offer many advantages to European regions where there is a secure food supply.
