Members of the European organic producing community are anxiously awaiting the EU Commission’s revision of the organic regulations, according to reports from a conference held by l’Agence Bio last month in France.

The Commission announced its plans for a revision last December and the updated regulations are to be announced at the beginning of next year, to be applied in 2009.

The industry is calling for a clearer international logo to signify organic origin. Felix Prinz, president of BOELW, the German organic sector organisation, said he wanted a sign that would show his clients that his produce was 100 per cent certified organic.

He said although other countries could boast better logos than the one currently used in Germany, a Europe-wide insignia would be more appropriate.

Other appeals from the sector include a simplification and improvement of the aims and principles at the heart of organic agriculture and a harmonisation of the rules of production with criteria specific to each community.
