Organic Braeburn soars in popularity

Sainsbury’s organic Braeburn sales are increasing at a rate of around 10 per cent a year, it said this week.

The chain has seen its conventional Braeburn increase in popularity in the last few years, in common with the market in general, but the trend has clearly moved to organics.

Introduced in 1999, annual sales of organic Braeburn have increased rapidly, with more than one million apples sold in the last year alone.

Anome Oyetey, dedicated organic buyer at Sainsbury’s, said: “With demand for organic fruit climbing each year, we continue to source the highest quality varieties for our customers.” Braeburn is demanded by consumers in the UK for its unique crunchy, crisp texture, which is balanced by a slightly sharp taste, he added.

"2004 is a fantastic year for Braeburn - in particular the organic New Zealand Braeburn crop will give consumers access to an apple variety performing at its very best.”

Sainsbury’s sells eight varieties of organic apple, including Royal Gala, Braeburn, Jazz™ and Pink Lady ®. The 2004 New Zealand Braeburn crop will be in stores until October.
