Waitrose will be sponsoring the competition, and Anthony Turnbull, master of the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers (WCF), thinks this is only apt. 'Waitrose was the first winner of the 'Organic Supermarket of the Year' title', he said. 'And has been selling organic produce since 1983.' Entries are invited from growers, grower organisations and individuals or companies providing products or research and development to the UK or European fresh produce industry. Awards will be presented to those deemed to have made the most significant contributions to organic horticultural production, and organic research and development. Winners can expect a £1,000 cheque and a glass bowl for their efforts.

The WCF was founded around 1300 to govern the fruit trade throughout London, maintaining excellent quality and supply.

Waitrose strives to be the country's leading organic supplier among the supermarkets. They set up the Organic Assurance Scheme to support and advise aspiring organic farmers.
