Orange decline hailed as positive for citrus sector

Israeli citrus specialist Mehadrin Tnuport Marketing has responded to TNS data revealing that consumption of oranges in the UK has fallen by two per cent over the past 12 months - the third year of decline in a row - by saying the fall is a positive sign for the citrus sector as a whole.

Mehadrin Tnuport Marketing UK’s Philip Brown told FPJ: “The significant rise in easy-peeler sales over the same period far outweighs any small decline in orange sales, and this is not by any means a negative thing for the citrus category.

“This small decline in consumption of oranges is a result of massive growth in the popularity of easy peelers - we are actually putting more fruit in consumers’ baskets.”

Brown maintained that Mehadrin Tnuport Marketing UK has increased its Jaffa Or easy-peeler plantations in Israel by 24 per cent over the last two seasons, and said the company was ready for consumption of easy peelers to continue. “It is good news that consumption of easy peelers is increasing, as it is the area we have been targeting - this is what we need to see.”

Consumption of easy-peeler fruit such as satsumas and tangerines rose 35 per cent and 60 per cent respectively over the last 12 months, figures from TNS show. And sales of Jaffa clementines have increased 49 per cent against last year, according to Mehadrin Tnuport Marketing UK.
