Sainsbury’s online operations are set to be overtaken by Waitrose.

Waitrose, through the expansion of Ocado, is set to expand to become the second biggest online grocery retailer behind Tesco.

At the moment, Ocado, part owned by Waitrose’s parent John Lewis, is thought to have sales of around £135 million, while the retailer’s own operation Waitrose Deliver, has sales of around £15m.

The news means Waitrose’s combined sales figure of £150m is edging closer to those of Sainsbury’s at £152m.

Meanwhile Sainsbury’s new chief executive, Justin King, has announced he is putting online expansion plans temporarily on hold to concentrate on core operations.
