Onion job an ordeal

Onion growers warn that the wet conditions so far this month have been far from ideal for drilling and are threatening to delay the new crop, as availability of this season’s bulbs coming out of store tightens.

“The warm wet winter has not been good for onion storage,” explained Tim Wigram, chairman of the British Onion Producers Association. “Most growers have invested in modern refrigerated cold stores and even controlled-atmosphere storage, but where growers are using older stores, this is a very difficult season for them. Supplies for the rest of the season will be tight as stocks are running low and it will be a difficult end to the campaign.”

Some suppliers are planning to go into southern hemisphere supplies up to two weeks earlier than in an average season.
