Visitors to The Co-operative store in Olney, in Buckinghamshire, on March 19 were treated not only to a day of perfect spring weather, but also activity in support of the start of the UK cucumber season.

Customers were able to sample freshly harvested cucumbers, as well as pick up some useful recipe tips highlighting the versatility of the popular fruit.

The event was organised by IVG White Ltd, a long-standing supplier to The Co-op.

David Morris, retail development controller at IVG White, said: “We were delighted to support The Co-op in this initiative as not only did it provide us with a great opportunity to promote the virtues of new-season, home-grown cucumbers, but it also enabled us to speak to customers on a wide range of topics - the feedback from which will assist us greatly in developing the business.”

The event also provided an opportunity to showcase The Co-op’s move to selling whole cucumbers without shrink-wrap - a move which is expected to save eight tonnes of plastic a year.

Carla Mills, salads buyer for The Co-op, said: “This event provided a perfect platform from which to highlight to customers our ongoing support for home-grown produce, in addition to demonstrating The Co-op’s long-standing commitment to environmental improvement.”
