Oh no for nisperos

Nispero production in Spain is likely to be considerably down this season.

In the principal growing area Callosa d’En Sarriá, where fruit is protected by denomination of origin status, volumes are forecast to be almost half of those harvested last year.

“The frosts in March and February caused serious damage and led to the loss of about half of the crop,” said Fructuoso Martínez of the Callosa d’En Sarriá co-op. “Another effect has been the delay in maturity which means that we were starting the harvest last week, when we should have been two weeks into the peak. Last year we surpassed the 20,000 tonne mark whereas this season it will be hard to top 11,000t.”

Fruit quality is good and production going through packhouses is of excellent quality. Fruit size is also on the large side which is good news for markets. “With a bit of cool weather at night-time and without any rain in the area, we should get to market with a crop slightly down in tonnage but of excellent quality,” said Martínez.
