The Organic Growers’ Alliance (OGA) is to host a day tackling the subject of organic protected cropping.

The event, to be held on October 17 at Hankham Organics in East Sussex, promises to be an inspiring day for anyone interested or involved in organic protected cropping.

Hankham Organics grow a range of glasshouse crops for its box scheme and wholesale customers. A unique system has developed with the restoration of a 1.5-acre glasshouse to combine commercial efficiencies with variety, diversity and a grass roots ethos.

The OGA said: “These are interesting times for glasshouse and polytunnel growers, with the Soil Association presently looking at refining the standards. A renewed interest generated by unpredictable weather patterns and the public's hunger for quality salad crops is being largely offset by increased costs of fuel and raw materials, plus quality and reliability issues with composts and fertilisers.”

Speakers will include Miles Denyer from Hankham Organics, Ben Raskin of the Soil Association, Dr Adrien Izzard from Wild Country Organics and Peter Dollimore, also from Hankham Organics.
