Competition bosses are investigating claims supermarkets are overcharging their online customers.

A spokesman for the Office of Fair Trading said: “We are examining supermarket pricing online, and have held confidential discussions with supermarkets.”

So far, Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s have confirmed they have had talks with the OFT, which is looking into whether the retailer stick to advertised prices and if online and store prices differ.

According to media reports, the OFT has four areas of concern, including charging for a premium product and supplying a regular item and whether the websites are being used to sell food being that is close to its sell-by date.

Tesco said customers could chose to not have any products substituted and said online prices were the same as in-store. Meanwhile Sainsbury said fresh food close to its sell-by date would not be included in online orders.
