Online supermarket Ocado saw group gross sales rise by 20 per cent in the 52 weeks to 1 December.

Gross sales for the group also rose 18.6 per cent in the 16 weeks to 30 November.

Retail gross sales, which refer to results of Ocado.com, kitchen store Sizzle.co.uk and online pet store Fetch.co.uk, were up 15 per cent for the full year to 1 December.

The retailer, which has agreements with Morrisons and Waitrose, said it expects to see continued growth ahead of the wider grocery market.

Chief executive Tim Steiner said the company’s positive performance demonstrates the ongoing shift towards online grocery shopping.

'We are pleased with the continued steady growth in our business against the backdrop of a more competitive grocery market,” he said. “This performance reflects an increasing number of customers who value the wide range of products, keen prices and great service made possible by Ocado's unique operating model, and further demonstrates the ongoing shift to online grocery shopping.

He added that the company will look to up the quality of its offering to support continued growth.

“Although we anticipate the retail environment to remain challenging, we expect to continue growing sales slightly ahead of the online grocery market,” he said.

The company saidOcado Group gross sales figures include the benefits from the Morrisons agreement, as well as revenue plus VAT and marketing vouchers.
