New Zealand press reports suggest a group of kiwifruit growers from the country wants to break away from New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers Inc (NZKGI) to form an independent kiwifruit growers association.

A spokesman for the putative body has been reported in the NZ press saying some growers have concerns over the profitability of green kiwifruit and lack confidence in NZKGI to address their concerns and those concerns or effectively scrutinize the operation of single-desk seller Zespri under national kiwifruit export regulations.

The group is reportedly calling for greater transparency from Zespri as well as earlier payment for crops, rather than the existing 14-month staggered arrangement. It is also seeking a review of the shareholding structure, claiming many retired growers continue to hold shares and that there is therefore an imbalance between production and shareholding.
