The frost struck a week ago, but growers are still assessing the damage and some are reported to be facing the loss of their entire crop. The New Zealand Herald reports some 350 insurance claims from the region were filed following the cold snap.
The worst affected orchards are likely to be those growing Zespri Gold fruit because it is an early flowering variety. Zespri has said it is too early for accurate assessment.
