Ian Palmer, chair of Pipfruit NZ, said: “The very hot temperatures around the growing regions have been a concern and certainly have increased the incidence of sunburn in some varieties. Cox from Nelson has tended to show a little more sunburn than normal…

“We are starting to see our dominance on Royal Gala and Braeburn easing. This trend will continue as more new intellectual-property type varieties become part of the planting mix. I expect to see a rapid rise in the plantings of Envy and T17 over the next few years.”

Palmer added that he was “surprised” that Braeburn volumes have not risen as much as he had suspected. He said: “I still have concerns for the volume of large sizes that will still be sent to market in what is likely to be a fuller supply season.”
