For the first time in several seasons, the New Zealand apple industry is not facing any significant labour shortage at harvest time.
Chairman of Pipfruit New Zealand Ian Palmer said: “As usual, the harvest always brings a different set of challenges each year. This season we have seen Royal Gala come on rapidly, certainly testing harvest logistics at times. General reports I have received are that growers have managed the intense harvest very well…
“At this stage, it appears that labour shortages are not an issue for the first time in some years. But with the peak Jazz, Braeburn and Fuji harvest period to go, we are not quite out of the woods yet.”
