Haskaps, one of the novel crops identified by Fernandez in her Nuffield study

Wilkins & Sons is to run an open day featuring presentations from Nuffield scholars Felicidad Fernandez and Sarah Calcutt, in a bid to encourage more candidates to sign up for 2009.

A tour of the Tiptree jam factory and the fruit farm will be followed by brief presentations and a barbecue, where visitors can discuss applications, interviews and project development.

The scheme has generous funding, strong support and a global network of people to assist scholars.

Chris Newenham, farm manager, will host the event. Fernandez, who completed her scholarship in 2006, will be speaking about her study of novel crops and her travels to find species and varieties suitable to the UK climate. Calcutt, who will finish this year, will give a talk on the 2008 contemporary scholars’ conference in Melbourne Australia and the conference tour around Victoria.

Newenham, Fernandez and Calcutt are all scholars of the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers. Their studies are published to support the development of the UK fruit industry.

All scholarship applications are viewed with regard to the personal development of the individual and for the benefit of their industry as a whole.

The closing date for Nuffield scholarships in 2009 is November 15.
