Newcastle is the pomegranate capital of the UK according to a survey by Sainsbury’s.
Sales for the exotic fruit are around 12 per cent higher in Newcastle than any other city in the UK.
The retailer claims that consumers in the North are the biggest consumers of exotic fruit overall, with Manchester buying the most passion fruit and Glasgow eating the most melon.
The study also revealed that students are the healthiest consumers, despite a reputation for living on beer and junk food. Those aged between 16 and 24 were eating more fruit and veg and exercising more than their parents.
They scored 9.29 out of 20 on the retailer’s healthy lifestyle quiz, compared with 7.4 for those aged 40 to 45-years-old. The UK average is 7.78.
