Chief executive Jo Stewart saw his pay and benefits rise from £379,735 to £441,146 that included an annual bonus of £25,000. While finance director Sean Christie also received a £25,000 bonus that contributed to his rise from £254,122 to £299,369.

Christie pointed out that both he and Stewart had taken a pay cut in the year to end March 2002, as they had not received bonuses because the group had not met performance targets.

Two directors at Northern Foods received increases in their pay packages of more than 16 per cent, despite a fall in underlying profit.
