The North West of England has come under the spotlight in this week’s issue, ahead of the next in our series of FPJ Conferences in Manchester next week.

The region, like many across the UK, has had to face its fair share of challenges over the years, but the development of major cities Manchester and Liverpool is representative of much of the newfound vibrancy that is pushing forward the fresh produce industry in the area.

The opening of the Liverpool Produce Terminal 18 months ago, for one, has revolutionised the way that fruit and vegetables can be brought into the north of the country. Manchester’s New Smithfield Market is poised on the edge of a new start once plans for redevelopment get underway.

The retail landscape, too, has carved itself a strong regional identity with the likes of North West chain Booths and twice Re:fresh QV Foods Independent Retailer of the Year Wareings of Tarleton building strong links with local growers and suppliers.

These are just some examples of the kind of hard-working, down-to-earth attitude that characterises the region and will ultimately, get results in the long term.

FPJ will head to Manchester’s Midland Hotel for our North West conference on 3 June to hear representatives from the retail, wholesale and foodservice sectors discuss the best way forward for the region and consider the question of longterm investment.

Hope to see you there.
