North-West warms up

Exceptionally warm weather at the end of June has kept cherries in the US north-west growing rapidly and enhanced fruit quality, according to North West Cherries representatives in Washington state. "Damage to the early production regions has cleared out and left us with some great fruit to run across the lines," said a spokesman. Fruit from the more elevated growing areas is reported to be "outstanding".

The region has now passed its half-way point in terms of harvesting and a further 3.5 million boxes remain to be harvested.

Production of light-coloured Ranier is increasing as the season goes on and availability should build in the coming weeks.

Picking should continue well into August in Washington state with Oregon and Idaho winding up sooner by the beginning of next month and Utah finishing in by the end of July.
