Country dwellers throughout the north east value the work of their farmers, according to a new survey by the NFU.

In Yorkshire and the north east 350 people took part and 94 percent of them were satisfied with life in the countryside.

And, despite government statistics suggesting rural areas experience lower levels of crime than urban areas, the survey showed in the past 12 months, 12.5 percent of people have been affected by rural crime with theft accounting for 64 percent of crimes committed.

On a national scale, Yorkshire and the North East are among the lowest affected areas.

The survey also revealed public opinion of UK farming is extremely positive among the rural community and 83 percent felt farmers should be paid for environmental measures on their land.
