Extending the offer of its already active wholesale department, Norman Collett Ltd has acquired Metrofruit Ltd in a move that promises growth for both enterprises.
Founded in 1982 by Jack Stevens, Metrofruit began as a small importation enterprise, mainly focused on French top fruit. It swiftly grew, extending its scope to include British summer fruits and seasonal vegetables.
This area of the business grew again when Alan Brooks joined the company in 1992, making the move to 12-month continuity of trading in speciality lines such as courgettes.
Stonefruit is currently a major part of trading, moving from cherries and apricots to peaches and nectarines as availability increases. Apples are now a minor part of the enterprise, with a greater degree of concentration on the vegetable trade.
One of the unique characteristics of Metrofruit is its close relationship with growers - all trading is direct with the producer, providing a high level of service to a wide range of loyal customers.
Norman Collett managing director Andy Sadler feels that the acquisition of Metrofruit offers the company a base from which to develop opportunities in high-quality imported produce. “Norman Collett and its sister company County Local serve a wide range of wholesale, fresh service and supermarket customers,” he said. “We feel that this is an ideal time to begin extending the wider offer of our business, an opportunity facilitated by Metrofruit Ltd.”
