Hargreaves is lifting its first 'gras of 2010

Hargreaves Plants Ltd is lifting the first asparagus crowns of the season in West Norfolk.

The company produces a number of asparagus varieties and has supply arrangements with some of the world’s largest asparagus breeders, including the University of Guelph, Aspara-Pacific, Vilmorin and Brock Asparagus.

Hargreaves hopes the new varieties will offer improved flavour, yield potential and disease resistance compared to many of the older Dutch and French varieties, allowing them to supply asparagus crowns to commercial growers and major garden centre chains.

Jamie Petchell, Hargreaves commercial director, said: “Producing crowns in the UK is proving to be a great success for growers who are witnessing improved quality and, of course, favourable prices due to current exchange rates.”
