Nolem melons one week early to UK

Capespan is entering its fifth season in partnership with Brazilian melon shipper Nolem, with the first containerised fruit set to arrive this week, one week earlier than expected.

”The 2007 season started extremely well in August, slightly earlier than in previous years,” Capespan commercial manager Dean Shaw told FPJ. “We have seen increased programmes with both our retail and wholesale customer base, together with significant increases with our prepared fruit customers. This is in line with the double-digit growth reported in this sector.”

The three main varieties shipped this season will be Yellow Honeydew, watermelons and Cantaloupe. “Continual development work means we can now also deliver varieties such as Margitte and Royal Galia,” said Shaw.

The majority of Brazilian melons now arrive at the Port of Sheerness, enabling Capespan to provide a quicker turnaround of fruit for its customers, he added.
